I’m down here driving nails all day, breaking my back for pay. Old John Henry’s turning in his grave ‘cause that steam drill won anyway. Now I’ve got me a Polly-Ann, I’ve got my walking boss, but ain’t nobody gonna sing no song when I break my damn fool heart. My grand-daddy fought in the western front where black skies burned the blue. Lighting up Jerry from the tail gun of a Boeing 52. But when FDR let Dresden burn it broke my granddad’s heart. Now it’s just a little more blood and your last dollar or the whole world falls apart. Well there’s wolves out on the prowl, there’s a fox in the henhouse now. Board your windows and lock your doors, They’re gonna burn this whole world down. How low can they go? How many more dead sons? Well they kiss their cheeks and shake their hands and send ‘em off with a gun. I’m down here driving nails all day, working for a brighter day. Wondering when the war’s coming home and just who’s gonna pay. It ain’t you getting shot to hell, staring up at some drone. Or your little sister crying out alone in the dark desert cold. While we were sleeping they built a beast out of fire, gears, and skin. Now they build the bombs where they built the cars in Warren, Michigan.

Angel of mercy, don’t you let me down easy Don’t be fooled by the holes in the knees of my jeans Don’t you lay your loving hands across these crooked shoulders Because I’m older now and I know there is treason in mercy When I was a young one my mother said son you’ve got to love all your neighbors and everyone you meet That lesson held tight It kept me alive But you learn to walk that line learn to love learn to fight And maybe we'll answer for this dance of fools when we are free from all this wanting there’s nothing left to lose Just some old stubborn lovers some blacked out old blues Oh mercy me So get me out of this town Get me out of this country Let me lay here on the floor just as quiet as a wing I’m sick of the way we worship violence and fame It’s one endless parade marching kings to their graves So just seek and you will find there’s peace on the edges sometimes Sleep don’t come easy, if it comes around at all and if it does will you know that you’re dreaming? So get me out of this town Get me out of this country Kick the door in on everything get me out of my head I pray that you’ll find me in the sway of an old pine tree The river gently winding leaves nothing left unsaid

Wolves 02:53
Dark skies ahead, hard times behind I may be losing my mind But there ain’t nothing to fear but what I’ve lost dear Darlin’ beware what you find I could’ve swore I couldn’t take any more Stuck ink, and drink towards the end On and on, on and on Til the great hoop wheels again So let the cold wind carry me home May the northstar always show A little love in my hands and I can’t understand how I could ever ask for more Feels like full time work staying over the dirt praying for those who’ve gone on Someday, sometime, my soul will fly And I’ll see them all down the line If only my arms could keep you from harm and my hands keep the wolves from the door But there ain’t nothing to do, but see this life through There’s no steering clear of the storm

Roll me over and turn me ass up. This shit’s getting tired, and I’m fading now. Took the last 20 years raising sons that won’t come home no more. Everything must die, and boy you ain’t looking right. You can take my name off of every list, sir I’m gonna jump off a goddamn bridge. Drive my truck to the top of Bear Mountain, here I leap, and here I fall. Everything must die, and I’m tired of waitin for my time. Down in the alley where the dead men sleep I spend my paycheck on spinning things. This is just a splinter of that bender, hand me my wine every goddamn day. Everything must die, and boy you ain’t looking right. You can take my name off of every list, sir I’m gonna jump off a goddamn bridge. Drive my truck to the top of Bear Mountain, here I leap, and here I fall. Everything must die, and I’m tired of waitin for my time.

Take my life and lay me down ain’t got no use for higher ground ain’t got not use for no kingdom in the clouds I swear I’ll die a happy man, if I can lay in your hands if I can roll out darling in your arms And now some folks wait on some promises made by some old fool who wagered on the faith But my soul has been saved by my own wicked ways and a kingdom for her love anyday Now everyone forgiven for what we cannot know Buried in your hearts and lost in your hands; Without fail, lovers without love I used to dream dark dreams walk them darkest streets I used to need things no good man should need. But I can’t regret one single misstep because every drunken one let me onto you

I know you’re going crazy. Gonna leave me here maybe. You thrashed all night, tossed into the morning light, and woke me up crying. I know it gets hard on these high plains, in these same old bars. Nothing new under the sun. Now I’m feeling kind of lazy. I find it’s hard to carry on working this same goddamned land that killed my granddad. Nothing new under this Oklahoma sun. But your heart has turned, I heard you pleading with your grandmama’s urn. Asking how the hell she ever made it through. This land is hard. These rolling plains stretch so far. Folks can’t get their minds around what lies on the other side. It may be safer just to stay, but you come to me shaking hard from your borderland dream. And you whisper Texas babe. Crawl in this old Ford. You grind the gears and I’ll work the floor. Let that panhandle go, let that cool blue norther blow the echos of a thousand prayers. Come that first light of dawn, darlin’ we will be long gone. Long gone.

No Surrender 03:40
We were young and full of hell, took our time and spent it well But those days, they are rusted and gone I am but bound by memories and tethered by old guitar strings Somewhere out there in some old song I toed the line and held it strong I could see the forest for the trees But now I’m rusted, busted and weak Weathered by things I cannot see But all I need is gasoline for my tired old machine Everything I left is in the wind All I want is a few more days to find my way back when and say that come hell or high water come all you sons and all of you daughters there ain’t no surrender I’m tired of this cold grind Driving home one-eyed at closing time I’m tired of losing my damn mind I’m sorry friend but it’s been too long since we got tight, hit the road and drove til dawn But I call your name in the morning light Nickel-bound and wound down to hail the night And the green beneath the steel yard’s heat Now where are we? Ships in the night. Was there some road where I turned? Some goddamn bridge I forgot to burn? Some trick that I never learned? Under the weight of the midday sun Hammer in hand, pills and booze and loaded guns

Lost in my living room, where does the day go? I sat down to catch my breath about six hours ago. There’s a crack in the kitchen wall, I think it’s growing in size. The whole damn world is crashing down right before my eyes. It’s the devil if you do, damned if you don’t. It’s the highway if you will, right here if you won’t. My back is tired babe, my mind ain’t right. Lost in your medicine chest, dying for the light. But I may just turn my head and walk away. It’s been my habit for some time to wait for better days. It’s the devil if you do, damned if you don’t. It’s the highway if you will, right here if you won’t Never seen the great north woods, never been to Maine. A man I know and don’t really trust, well, he says its all about the same. I could build a roaring fire, burn some memories, and search that pyre for something worthwhile in the ashes of yesterday. But I’m gonna follow my heart straight back to bed and try again in the afternoon when I ain’t shaking so bad. It’s the devil if you do, damned if you don’t. It’s the highway if you will, right here if you won’t

There’s fruit flies in the kitchen fucking up all my food My lady’s grown tired of my blues, as she’s bound to do Darlin I swear that I ain’t crazy Dogs barking at nothing at 3 in the morning There’s something living inside of these walls chewing on the cording Darlin I swear that I ain’t crazy But these little things just get right to me Lord grant me the strength to carry on ‘Cause one more goddamn day like this and I’m moving on Can’t find the grocery list, but the writing’s on the wall We are lost, abandon ship boys, you can’t save ‘em all Darlin I swear that I ain’t lazy I read a book on being and existential dread If we’re all just suffering for nothing babe then why get out of bed? Darlin I swear that I ain’t lazy but this half-blind frenchman’s getting to me Lord grant me the strength to carry on ‘Cause one more goddamn day like this and I’m moving on Lord give me calm and steady hands My fingers curling into fists and my punches always land The boss is letting me go, putting me on a shelf I’d like to say that it ain’t my fault but I work for myself Darlin I swear that I ain’t lazy but this shit ain’t worth what I pay me Lord grant me the strength to carry on 'Cause one more goddamn day like this and I'm moving on Lord give me calm and steady hands My fingers curling into fists and my punches always land.

Darlin’ I don’t know just where I’m from I feel the cold down in my bones But oh how I’m burning up If I come to my senses, I believe I’ll head out west where no hard luck, no law man will ever find their rest So Darlin’ don’t you worry, don’t you moan I ain’t in no hurry to go ‘Cause no one sees through my deep blacks and my blues Just sweet oblivion and you Darlin’ how I pine, searching for some simpler days Just a madman on some long ship cutting hellbound through the waves Oh dear, how I lie. Searching for what I will not find Just a sad man, and ill-equipped Riding roughshod over my mind So Darlin’ don’t you worry, don’t you moan I ain’t in no hurry to go ‘Cause no one sees through my deep blacks and my blues Just sweet oblivion and you
