about

As a child, my dad and I would take every chance we had to fish the rivers and reservoirs in the Sandhills of western Nebraska. These excursions were never really planned, just meandering camping trips looking for new fishing holes, eating walleye we'd catch, or finding a diner if we didn't have much luck. We'd stick to the back roads, weaving through miles and miles of sandy ranch land and prairie grass, stopping in every town or wide spot in the road. These days, many of these places are shrinking, some are all but deserted, a few of them are outright ghost towns. Brownlee was one of those places. I'm not sure how old I was when we first went there; 8, maybe 10. There may have been a few people living on the edge of town; folks who liked the quiet, or needed the isolation, but most of the few gravel streets seemed frozen in time. I remember walking through the cemetery, looking through the cracked glass of old storefronts. I remember the streets still smelling like horses. For a boy with an imagination, it was the best place on earth.
Like many rural areas, there's been a slow migration of people from Brownlee and the towns around it. There's no doubt that the sandhills are a hard country. It's a vast space known for hot, often dry summers, bitter winters, and a history of economic hardships. It's these same hardships though that have shaped a people with quick minds, strong backs, big hearts, and a knack for surviving just about anything you throw at them. My dad knew the importance of places like these.
Last I checked, he was only a few stops shy of having been to every town in Nebraska. With the miles between us now, it's been a while since we've gone fishing, or found a new ghost town, but I still think back on those trips fondly, and often.

lyrics

The gravel spur off the 83 line, the road that leads out to Brownlee.
It's straight and flat, there's some old cat tracks
You're in Cherry county now son.
The South and it's grandeur ain't never been my land, no sir.

The Sand and rain, old pine and lead pane
The store fronts bowed and broken down.
There's a river here, and it leads somewhere,
But it doesn't matter much where son.
Because the waves out past the loam, they've never been my home.

Your granddad made his way to this land
In a black, 38 Ford.
Back in those days this was a better place
Than what you see here today.
It's just grey dust and bones, Red rust and headstones
My son, if you pray, pray alone,
you'll be the only one.
The only one.

It ain't much, just heard hearts, sand and such.
But it's alright, everyday turns to night.
This land ain't dying, but she's a little tired of the times of trying to lay her low,
but these roots run deeper than you know.

Take my feet, lay them in the stream,
Put my voice on the wind.
Hold my hands, press them in the sand,
Give my heart to the grassland.

'Cause I was never one for these city streets my son,
And if you pray, pray alone.
You'll be the only one.
The only one.
